Flavor Restaurant-Reaches for the Beaches

Look closely at the photograph of the Granada Depot and one can see the structural bones of Flavor Restaurant. This prominent corner on the coast housed a number of establishments, the first being a depot for the Ocean Shore Railroad, built in 1911.

Not much remains of the Ocean Shore Railroad, originally conceived as an electric train, which would run up and down the Coast from San Francisco to Santa Cruz. Rough terrain, less-than-sunny weather, and frequent malfunctions turned this original tourism transit system into a mostly vegetable freight line. The 1906 earthquake was the first blow in a series of events that led to the line’s ultimate demise.
